Dr. Louis Gelrud retired from Gastrointestinal Specialists Inc. in December 2013.
Louis Gelrud founded Gastrointestinal Specialists, Inc. , and served in a leadership capacity throughout the life of the corporation, overseeing its growth and development. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Gelrud attended the University of Maryland, where he was awarded a BA in 1967. He also achieved his MD degree in 1971 at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he also attained membership in Alpha Omega Alpha. He came to Richmond, to The Medical College of Virginia, where he did his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine, finishing in 1975. He then went on to complete a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at The Medical College of Virginia in 1977. From 1977 to 1979 Dr. Gelrud practiced at St. Mary’s Hospital as Louis G. Gelrud, M.D., Ltd. The present practice name, Gastrointestinal Specialists, Inc. was chosen in 1983 when the group had grown to three physicians.
During his years of practice, Dr. Gelrud played an important leadership role for the hospital, serving on various committees and offering suggestions on how to streamline operations and maximize quality care. He also kept up with a large practice, with many long-term, very loyal patients, along with a steady influx of new patients.
